Prom. Oh, Oh Prom…

I was never THE prom queen at my high school… (Wait, we never even HAD a prom king & queen). But - I WAS the girl that TOTALLY enjoyed prom each year. I went to 3 prom’s at my high school and each one was a big deal. Especially going as a sophomore. I thought I was pretty cool!

Sophomore Year

Junior Year

Senior Year

(I am quite partial to my Senior year date… and… realistically, I had a tiny thought that maybe one day I would be wearing a pretty dress again with HIM as my date. Little did I know that was part of God’s HUGE, MAGNIFICENT plan!)

Prom time is approaching for all the sweet, darling highschoolers and I LOVE looking at the new Prom dress styles. This may sound silly… but I still have a small bond with each of my 3 dresses. They weren’t cheap and they weren’t quick to find. I had a vision each year of what I wanted…. and…. when it all came together, It was amazing.

Kind of like our Wedding Day.

We would always joke in High School that our Weddings would be like Prom JUST for US! Yep. That dream came true and it was like a Prom just for US!

At work, I am helping with a dress drive for under privileged girls to be able to go to prom. We have collected gowns, shoes, and accessories. I am floored at the HUGE response. At my location alone we have collected 50+ dresses already. It is INCREDIBLE. This organization is Ever After Gowns.

I am having a hard time as one of the volunteers of this drive. I can’t seem to part with my dresses ever just yet. I have borrowed out my gowns to girls the last 2 years. I just can’t help but hang on to them for a little while longer.

Do you still have your prom gowns? What is your take on this? Am I crrraazzzy???

Oh my goodness Ria...I wore a dress almost EXACTLY like your pink one your sophomore year, but I wore mine my junior year! I went to 6 proms (yikes I know!) I went to a couple in small towns close to ours and then sophomore, junior, and senior year at my own high school! I feel the same way about my dresses...although I only bought the 3 dresses for my own prom (I just borrowed ones for the out of town ones) I still don't want to get rid of them! I thought about donating mine to a drive we are having here too, but my mom suggested I hold onto them a little longer as well. I don't know for what, but we can't let them go haha!

I didn't have prom, being from Ireland and all! But we did have two formals ... and I have kept both of my dresses. I've also added to my dress collection since then. Giving them away never once entered my mind, and I don't think it makes me sound greedy (who knows? maybe it does!! ha ha!) but, you see ... I still wear my dresses! Not everyday down to the shops obviously, but there are occasions when I have to dress up all nice and I like having a small selection of dresses to choose from. This makes economical sense to me, rather than buying a new dress every single time I have to go to a fancy shindig. I should also add that my dresses weren't quite as spectacular as yours ... wow!!

So wonderful you are part of this organization. Love it. I never went to the prom. Oh, I was asked by a few guys but I knew my parents couldn't afford it so I said no. It's all good however, I got to wear the most beautiful dress with the most amazing date on the day I got married and that made up for it all.

IF you love your prom dresses like I love my wedding dress then your not crazy!! =) Plus, you let other girls wear them so it is not like you are just hording them away in your closet. ;)

I loved my proms. They were what high school was all about. My dresses were much like yours. A dream, a study, and finally a very expensive buy. Now I have 3 prom dresses sitting in my closet. I'm too attached to give them away, and don't necesariily want to keep them...thinking though that they'll probably end up as play clothes for my future daughters. =]

What a great organization! That is such a great idea! I understand your bond with your dresses. I feel the same about my wedding dress. I don't feel that way about my prom dress though (I only went to one), because I had a really bad experience with the guy I was with (we dated for a year, and it was border-line emotionally abusive, and he was verrrry controlling!) So it's probably the fun memories that are connected to the dresses for you that are hard to get rid of :-)

You're definitely not crazy, I have both of my dresses from Junior & Senior year. While I've considered loaning them out, I've never offered & I've never considered giving them away. I just can't part with them.

(By the way...LOVE your dress from your senior year, you look BEAUTIFUL!)

Hi Ria.. I haven't been to prom for 32 years and I still have my two dresses. The first one was a Gunne Sacs dress..white with little blue flowers. It has long sleeves with long, tight cuffs that zip up. It also has criss-cross ties in the front (does anyone my age remember these?). The second one my mom made for me, which makes it extra special. Bright green with thin straps and a chiffon, floral jacket to go over. So many good memories prom was so much fun. My daughter enjoys looking at them and giggling and can't believe I wore them. So keep them around to enjoy with your future daughters and grand daughters. I don't think its weird (or is it???) Have fun with them. God Bless You....Cindy Magnuson

I still have my senior prom dress. I can't find anyone to buy it. I sold my junior prom dress, the bright orange ballgown. I wish I hadn't sold it. It was so gorgeous, and so me. You are definitely not crazy. I at my prom dresses as steps toward me becoming a woman.
